Rowing
Rec
rowers are adults who wish to row for fun, recreation, fitness and
friendship. While racing other crews is an enjoying part of rowing,
competition is not the driving force behind rec rowing.
Rec rowing is mainly done in touring boats.
These boats are wider and therefore more stable for those rowing
for fun and fitness. The touring quads (4 people boat + coxie) are
very popular, and there are also doubles (for 2) and singles (for
1) available. Larger groups can go in eights.
Rec
rowing is very relaxed and groups of friends who wish to row together
can go in whatever boats they wish. As well, as rowers get more
advanced they will have the opportunity to move up into racing boats,
usually quads.
More advanced coaching is
available on a individual basis. Recreational rowers have the liberty
to go at their own pace.
Rec rowers compete at local
regattas, such as Dominion Day Regatta at Toronto Island, and the
annual Kingston Heart and Stroke Rec Regatta. As well, every year
Bayside Rec rowers along with competitive rowers travel to Pittsburgh
for the Head of the Ohio regatta. Rec rowing begins each May and
continues until early October.
