Overview Fall | Spring

Spring training is for those who would like to pursue rowing at a competitive level. Participants will train in school crews and receive coaching in order to improve their technical skills and fitness. The goal is develop as an athlete and a rower, but most importantly to have fun!

Junior Development Program

Our goal is to develop and encourage those who would like to continue rowing. The Junior Development Program is geared towards those who have taken a Learn to Row, participated in the League or who have previous experience in the boat.

The Junior Varisty Program will train 3 times a week in their crews in preparation for various regattas. Training will focus around several key concepts including improving technique and fitness as well as developing muscle strength. The Junior Varisty rower's knowledge of rowing will increase greatly as they learn about bladework and proper power application, as well as practicing racing starts.

Rowers in this program work towards participating in high school and club competitions with their crews. There are many opportunities to attend regattas such as the Mother's Day Regatta, the Western Ontario Secondary School Rowing Association Championships, and Scugog Invitational.

Crews will row in various sizes of boats ranging from eight man boats down to quads and doubles, depending on the participation from the various schools. The main focus of Junior Development rowing is developing the skills of new rowers while keeping the program fun and interesting!

Competitive Rowing

Competitive rowing is for the competitive athlete. For those who are dedicated to the sport and enjoy both the training and the competitive sides of rowing. This program is for those who have graduated from the Junior Development Program and have met their ergometer testing standards.

The season begins as soon as the ice melts in the ship channel, usually around the beginning of April. Training starts as soon as the docks get put back in the water with practices held every morning from 5:30 to 7:30.

Competitive rowers train 6 days a week in preparation for racing. Competitive rowers compete in the same regattas as Junior Development rowers (Mother's Day, WOSSRA, and Scugog) but Competitive rowers also have the opportunity to represent their schools at the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championships (nicknamed "Schoolboy"). Races are 2000 metres in length and rowers must compete in their school crews.

Much like other seasons, spring rowing focusses on improving technique and fitness so that athletes can perform well at the regattas.
