Overview Fall | Spring

Welcome to Bayside Rowing Club's High School rowing league! Our high school league is for students who wish to try rowing for fitness, competition or just for fun. This is not a school team.

Fall LTR (Learn to Row)

The fall learn to row program starts in the 3rd week of September. The program runs twice a week, Saturday and Sunday, in the mornings from 8-10 AM or 10-noon. You can look for posters at your school and also we will hold an after school meeting for anyone interested.

The weekend session covers how to row on an ergometer (a rowing machine), parts of the boat, safety procedures, oar carrying and boat carrying. On the second day, dockside instruction will be given, so participants are comfortable in the boat before shoving off. It is important for students to be present at the first few session so they don't hold back their crews!

By the second week, crews are in the boats, and on the water. We begin by completing drills that focus on rowing basics such as balancing, pushing with your legs, relaxing your arms and keeping your back straight. Beginners will train in "eights" which is a boat that seats eight people and a coxie to steer.

As crews gain experience and practice, coaches will move on to more advanced topics such as simple starts for a race situation and rowing in time with your crew.

All these skills will be put to use at a fun regatta called the Head of the Pumpkin, held at Bayside Rowing Club at the end of the session. Crews will race fellow students in the program for the Head of the Pumpkin trophy. This regatta is alot of fun. Teams dress up in costumes and there is a big barbeque for participants. During the fall season, crews also race in the Friendship Regatta with West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo, New York. Those rowers who show the greatest potential and are willing to commit to the training will then go to the Head of the Chattahoochee in Atlanta, Georgia

After completing our Learn to Row program, students who wish to continue will have the option of participating in winter training and the Jr. Varsity program (training 3 mornings a week) in the spring. For those who have completed the Jr. Varsity program, we offer more competitive training (5 mornings a week). Please visit our Club Competitive section for more information.
