Overview Fall | Winter | Spring | Summer

Club competitive rowing in spring is geared towards university rowers and those with ambition to move on to elite level rowing. Rowers get on the water in early April with the goal of applying new skills to the foundation established during the winter.

Spring Training

The spring rowing season begins as soon as the ice thaws. Rowers train 6 days per week with the objective of preparing for spring and summer regattas.

Training is intense and focused. Initially, rowing is done in larger boats such as quads and eights. As technique improves, rowers progress into singles, doubles and pairs. At this time of year, emphasis is placed on posture, core strength, flexibility and proper power application.

Ergometer rowing and weight training continue during this period. Erg testing in some form is conducted every two weeks. This gives the athlete feeback on their progress during a transitional period from dryland to on water training. Weight training will focus on the development of power and strength maintenance.

Rowers will attend the Head of the Martindale in St. Catharine's. In addition, more advanced rowers will go to the Speed Orders Regatta. Speed Orders is selection regatta for invitation to theCanadian National Rowing Team. Athletes have the opportunity to test their skills against the best rowers from across Canada.

For university rowers, this season wraps up with the Dad Vail Regatta in the United States. The best university rowers from all over North America compete in what has become the de facto North American University Championships.
