Winter
Training
Training
is done primarily on the ergometers (rowing machines) at Bayside's
winter training facility. This training is complemented with weight
training, as well as other activities such as running and cross-country
skiing.
In the winter, rowing
skills and power application are developed on the ergometer. Proper
technique gained on the ergometer prepares the athlete for proper
rowing on the water. Cardiovascular conditioning is enhanced through
varying workouts and intensities.
Weekly clinics and training camps are
held on Saturdays which focus on a variety of topics including:
nutrition, weight lifting technique, psychology, ergometer technique,
video analysis and power application. There is also an emphasis
on stretching since flexability is a large part of rowing.
A
highlight of the winter season is the Canadian Indoor Ergometer
Championships in February in Toronto. Athletes race 2000 metres,
competing against other rowers from across the country. A simultaneous
regatta, The Monster Erg, takes place in Victoria, BC, These results
allow the crowning of a true Canadian champion. In March, rowers
compete at the ROWONTARIO Ergometer Championships in St. Catharines.
A Spring Break training camp takes
place each February and/or March. It is held somewhere south where rowers get a
chance to hit the water before the ice melts in Canada. This allows
athletes to practice what they have learned over winter and also
is a great addition to the training schedule. In 2003, two camps
will be held. In February, the university rowers will attend the
New Orleans Mardi Gras Training Camp. In March, the high school
rowers will attend a training camp in South Carolina with rowers
focussing on their sculling techniques in the quad and double.
