Fall
Varsity
Training
in the fall takes place 6 times per week from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM.
Athletes are assembled into crews according to their weight, age
and skill level. Fall regattas include the Head of the Ohio regatta
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Head of the Charles in Boston and
the Head of the Rochester in October.
At this time of year, there are 8 weeks
left in the season. It is very important that rowers focus on their
weaknesses so we can enter the winter season with a sound technical
foundation. Technique is worked through drills and endurance is
built through rowing a minimum of 12 km per day. Additional practices
may take place in the afternoons and involve either weight training,
a second row or running. This approach keeps the focus on technique
yet gives the rower some flexibility during a time when schedules
may not allow.
More
advanced rowers will have the opportunity to participate in the
Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachussetts which has the greatest
number of spectators of any domestic regatta with more than 250,000.
Unlike spring and summer regattas
which are 2000 metres in length, Fall regattas are called "head"
races and are much longer, usually 5 km.
These races are contested
as time trials, where crews start at 10-15 second intervals and
their times are taken across the starting line and finish line for
a final time to be calculated. There are often upwards of 40 crews
entered in a head race. The fall season wraps up at the end of October
/ early November when it becomes too cold to row.
