Bayside Rowing Club Code of Conduct

Overview

The most significant aspect of Bayside Rowing Club being such as successful rowing club is that Bayside Rowing Club has a large youth rowing program. Our club has made tremendous inroads in making rowing an accessible sport and an integral part of the growing experience of our younger members. We recognise that our priority is to provide a positive and wholesome experience for young people in order to enjoy the benefits of dedication, teamwork and athleticism.

Because we have a broader focus on development, we also concern ourselves with the pressures and uncertainties faced by many of our younger members. The choices they make today will impact not only their ability to participate in rowing, but also their capacity to realise their ambitions.

We also recognise that no-one is perfect, but that choices made by individuals should not negatively impact on ones crew nor on Bayside Rowing Club. Our particular concern is with any event associated with Bayside Rowing Club. We want to ensure that all of our members maintain the confidence of other club members, our members’ parents, our hosts, and Bayside Rowing Club’s supporters in the wider community.

Therefore, the Board of Directors has made it a priority for the club to re-iterate explicit standards of behaviour for our club members to follow. The Board of Directors asked Lynn MacDonald, our Youth Rowing representative to research and develop a comprehensive Code of Conduct. Lynn examined similar initiatives at other athletic and youth-oriented organisations in order to develop a plan of suggested inclusions in the Bayside Rowing Club codes.

The following outlines are for all of Bayside Rowing Club's members. This code is designed to explain and avoid problems at Bayside-run or Bayside-associated events. They are not designed to constrict a member’s lifestyle, make decisions for them or make performance the sole purpose in ones life. However we do wish to provide:
- the athlete with a safe environment in which to train and participate;
- the opportunity to enjoy the wholesome sporting atmosphere which we all are trying to create; and
- the advantages of the confidence and support of the wider community.
